A rubella test measures and detects rubella antibodies in the blood that are formed in response to immunization or rubella virus infection. This antibody test is the most used method for the diagnosis of the rubella virus. Rubella infection is highly contagious and characterized by fever and rash, which can last about 2 to 3 days.

faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How is the blood sample taken?

A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm to take the blood sample. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins, making it easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

When rubella test is ordered?

There are two types of rubella antibodies, IgM and IgG. IgG rubella test indicated when a woman is pregnant or is planning to become pregnant. It helps to check whether immunity against rubella is required. IgM and IgG rubella tests may be ordered when a pregnant woman has signs and symptoms of rubella infection such as mild fever, a pink rash that starts from the face and then spreads downward to the body and then the legs and arms, runny or stuffy nose, red or inflamed eyes, aching joints and swollen lymph nodes.

Can I have a rubella vaccination if I am pregnant?

No, do not have rubella vaccination if you are a pregnant woman and avoid getting pregnant for at least one month after taking rubella vaccination.
