Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells. A reticulocyte count is a test used to measure the level of reticulocytes in the blood. Reticulocytes are formed in the bone-marrow and are released into the bloodstream.
If your red blood cell count is too low or too high your body will try to achieve a balance by producing and releasing more or less reticulocyte. Reticulocyte count can help in diagnosis of various conditions like anaemia and bone marrow failure.
It is also used to track the progress after chemotherapy, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplant or treatment of anaemia.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How is the blood sample taken?
To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

What are the symptoms of bone marrow failure?
The symptoms of bone marrow failure include: Feeling tired, sleepy or dizzy, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, headaches, prolonged bleeding, mouth sores, fever, etc.
What causes high reticulocytes count?

What are the causes of low reticulocyte count?
