Dengue is a viral disease that is caused by the bite of an Aedes mosquito. It occurs when the virus that causes the disease enters the bloodstream and triggers severe flu-like illness. In extreme cases, one may experience severe dengue, a life-threatening condition. The disease is most prevalent in tropical and sub-tropical climates in the world.
The female Aedes mosquito gets infected after biting a dengue-infected person. After it feeds on it, the virus undergoes replication in the mosquito’s midgut before spreading to the secondary tissues. The period from when the mosquito gets infected to when it infects a new human host is called the extrinsic incubation period.
Most dengue cases are asymptomatic or display mild symptoms in infants, children, and adults. The effects of this condition are usually visible four to ten days after a bite from an infected mosquito. These symptoms last for around two to seven days, during which medical intervention can help.
The dengue IgG-ELISA test assists in the serological detection of an acute or past dengue virus in a patient’s body. The test results are obtained through qualitative analysis of the blood sample to detect IgG antibodies for dengue.
The procedure is similar to a simple blood test. During the test, a clinical lab technician draws blood from the vein in the arm using a needle. The blood is stored in a marked container and sent for ELISA testing, a solid-phase IgG capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
The test involves the use of wells coated with purified dengue virus antigens. The patient’s blood sample is first diluted and incubated with the wells. If specific IgG antibodies bind to the antigen, the sample is positive for the dengue virus.
A second incubation takes place by catalysing a colour reaction using an enzyme-labelled anti-human IgG to recognise these bound antibodies. This method is usually recommended because IgG antibodies keep rising in the blood as the symptoms of dengue become more prevalent.
Apollo 24|7 offers a comprehensive dengue IgG–ELISA test to detect the onset of dengue and help the doctor devise a treatment plan. Some of the symptoms that occur due to this condition are:

- Muscle, bone, or joint pain
- Rash
- Swollen gland
Dengue also causes high fever in individuals. It is vital to visit a doctor at the onset of these symptoms since they may lead to severe complications. Some of the symptoms linked to severe dengue are:
- Persistent vomiting
- Irritability or restlessness
- Severe stomach pain
- Bleeding from your gums or nose
- Bleeding under the skin, which might look like bruising
- Difficult or rapid breathing
- Blood in your urine, stools or vomit
- Fatigue
These symptoms usually occur after the fever fades away and require immediate medical attention.
