This test is used to look for certain types of bacteria in the blood. The bacteria being tested for are called anaerobic because they don't require oxygen for them to grow.
An anaerobic blood culture means the test is done without letting oxygen get into the sample. Infections caused by the anaerobic bacteria can occur anywhere in the body. Finding the specific organism causing the infection may help the doctor to choose the right treatment.
Doctors may suggest the test if there are few symptoms like nausea, tachycardia, increased breathing, decrease in frequency/quantity of urine, fever with/and chills, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, etc. The infections caused by anaerobic bacteria may sometimes lead to severe conditions like organ failure.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How is the blood sample taken?
To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.
What are aerobic and anaerobic cultures?
An aerobic culture is where the growth is allowed in normal oxygenation, and an anaerobic culture is where the test is done without letting oxygen to get into the sample.
What is meant by septicaemia?
A life threatening condition of an infection, where chemicals released into the blood to fight off infection triggers an inflammation reaction in the body of a person in sepsis.
What are anaerobic organisms?
An anaerobic organism or anaerobe is an organism that does not require molecular oxygen for growth.
