The CA 72.4 - Cancer Marker Test is a diagnostic assessment that helps detect the presence of colorectal cancer, a form of cancer that begins in gastrointestinal system (colon and rectum). The CA 72.4 cancer marker is a biomarker that is directly linked to this cancer. These organs are a part of your gastrointestinal system.
The colon removes water and some micronutrients and electrolytes from partially digested food. Upon absorption, the waste matter is pushed through the small intestine into the rectum. Finally, the waste is expelled through the anus. This cancer essentially starts with the growth of polyps on the inner lining of your colon or rectum. Over time, these polyps can develop into an all-out colorectal cancer.
It is highly recommended to get diagnosis for cancer before it progresses to more severe stages. You should be aware of the following symptoms:
- Bright red blood emerging from the rectum
- Constipation
- Unexplained weight loss
- Anaemia
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Change in bowel movements
- Black or dark brown coloured faeces containing blood
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you can order a CA 72.4 - Cancer Marker Test from Apollo 24|7.
The cause of the disease is still unknown. However, it is known that cancer is triggered due to a combination of environmental and genetic factors. You are at a higher risk of contracting the condition:
- If you are male
- If you are above the age of 50
- If your diet has a high amount of red or processed meats
- If your diet lacks fibre
- If you don't indulge in physical activity much
- If you have an inflammatory bowel disease
- If you are a smoker
- If you consume alcohol frequently
- If you have Type-2 diabetes
- If you have polyps in your rectum or colon
- If you have had abdominal cancer in your childhood and have undergone radiation therapy
If you have had a family member with colorectal cancer, you are at significant risk of contracting the condition. In this case, catching the disease early on is vital. Here is a statistical estimate of certain early signs of the onset of cancer:
- 23% of patients have anaemia
- 34% of patients have abdominal pain
- 37% of patients experience blood in their bowels
However, it is also possible to start experiencing symptoms in the later stages of the disease. This is quite deadly since cancer might already have spread to the liver, lungs and other vital areas. Once cancer reaches your liver, you will contract jaundice. This condition causes your eyes and skin to turn yellow.
