Apolipoprotein Panel with Lipoprotein A is a blood test that measures the level of certain proteins involved in cholesterol metabolism in the blood. These proteins include the apolipoproteins A1, B, and E, which are found in many types of lipoproteins. Lipoproteins are substances that carry cholesterol and other lipids in the blood. There are different types of lipoproteins, including high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and low-density lipoprotein (VLDL).

Each type of lipoprotein plays a different role in cholesterol metabolism, and its abnormal levels increase the risk of heart disease. Apolipoproteins are proteins that bind to the surface of lipoproteins and play an important role in the metabolism of lipoproteins. For example, apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1), the main protein in HDL, is involved in transporting cholesterol from the tissues to the liver for excretion.

Apolipoprotein B (apoB), the main protein in LDL, is responsible for transporting cholesterol to tissues, including arteries. Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is found in many types of lipoproteins and plays a role in removing these products from the bloodstream. Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] is a lipoprotein similar to LDL but also contains a special protein called apolipoprotein (a) [apo(a)]. High Lp(a) levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

The Apolipoprotein Assessment Panel with Lipoprotein A is often recommended to patients with a personal or family history of heart disease or in patients with abnormal blood lipids despite lifestyle changes. The test package includes the 3 distinct tests, namely:

Apolipoprotein-A1 test: The Apolipoprotein A test measures the levels of APO A-1 in your bloodstream. This is the main component of HDL, and is needed to metabolize lipids. A lower APO A-1 count, accompanied by a high triglyceride count, is a stepping stone to heart disease.

  • Apolipoprotein B test: An Apolipoprotein B test checks the levels of lipoprotein B in your bloodstream. An LDL variant, a high lipoprotein B level is again an indicator of heart-related diseases, diabetes, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome, etc.
  • Apo B/A1 ratio: The Apo B/A1 ratio calculates the ratio of the level of LDL APO B to the level of HDL APO A-1. If your Apo B levels have increased and Apo A-1 levels have gone down, you are at risk of catching the diseases mentioned above.

Together, these three tests measure the amount of bad cholesterol in your bloodstream by determining Lipoprotein A levels. Hence, they can be used to check the risk of heart disease.  These tests require minimal prior preparation and only need you to fast for a period of 12 hours. Although this fasting won't include water, you must keep yourself hydrated at all times.

Apollo 24|7 offers a reliable and accurate Apolipoprotein Evaluation Panel With Lipoprotein A. The results are available within 8 days. So, if you have already taken a lipid profile test and nothing showed up on it, it is time to opt for a Lipoprotein A test. These 3 tests collectively offer the following uses:

  • Determination of Apo A-1 and Apo B lipoproteins in the bloodstream
  • Catch wind of the onset of cholesterol-related cardiovascular diseases
  • Monitor lipoprotein levels in case you are undergoing heart disease treatment
