  • Prunes: Prunes contain a good amount of oxalate, which, when consumed excessively, can tamper with the mineral absorption of the human body. Minerals like magnesium and calcium are indirectly responsible for thyroid health. 

The iodine content in fruits is minimal, which does not affect the thyroid health. However, one must ensure that he/she is consuming them in moderate amounts.

On the other hand, it is important to remember that some berries and citrus fruits like strawberries and peaches contain goitrogens. Since it can interfere with the thyroid glands’ iodine uptake, eating these fruits of a larger quality can lead to hyperthyroidism.

Incorporating fruits into the diet does not guarantee improving the thyroid condition. One has to follow a balanced diet that entails a number of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and fatty acids. The key thing here is that individuals must create a diet plan that provides all the nutrients essential to manage their thyroid condition. For instance, patients with hypothyroidism must have more iodine in their diet to stimulate hormone production and vice versa.

Lifestyle and Diet Recommendations

A balanced diet does not only mean selecting the right fruits. Eat foods high in fibre, lean protein, and healthy fats, and avoid foods containing excessive iodine, particularly if one has hyperthyroidism. Selenium, zinc, and vitamin D are also the key nutrients everyone needs to ensure their thyroid gland is healthy. So, it would be wise to include nuts, seeds, and fish in your diet to meet that need.

Besides changing diet, lifestyle changes like stress control, regular exercise, and adequate sleep contribute to thyroid health. Stress reduction can control hormone levels, while physical exercises enhance the overall function of the thyroid gland.
