A Tissue Transglutaminase (TTG) IgA, IgM, or IgG test is used as part of an evaluation to help doctors diagnose celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly considers gluten as a foreign invader. The immune system produces antibodies that attack an enzyme in the intestines called tissue transglutaminase (TTG).

faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How is the blood sample taken?

A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm to take the blood sample. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins, making it easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

When is this test ordered?

Your doctor will order this test if a child has symptoms of celiac disease, such as poor growth, belly pain, constipation, vomiting, diarrhoea, or rashes. Also, if a child has a condition that makes the celiac disease more likely such as thyroid disease or with a family history of celiac disease.

How much time does it take to complete this test?

Most of the blood tests usually take just a few minutes to complete. But, if your veins are hard to find, then your health professional may try more than once for a blood sample.

How much time does it take to get the results of this test?

It may take a few days for the results to be ready. Your doctor may order other tests to figure out the problem if the test results show signs of a problem.
