PSA Test (Prostatic Specific Antigen)

To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is asked to make a fist. This helps in the buildup of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. The needle is then inserted into the vein in the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

Prostate cancer is the cancer of the prostate gland. The prostate gland is present in males of walnut shape that produces seminal fluid which is responsible for nourishing and transporting sperm.

The signs and symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent urination, presence of blood in the urine, weak or interrupted urine flow, blood in the seminal fluid, and pain or burning during urination.

The risk factors of prostate cancer include increasing age, previous family history of prostate cancer, and obesity.

The complications of prostate cancer can cause urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and cancer that spread to other organs of the body.

Prior to giving a sample, one should avoid ejaculation for 24 hours. Avoid any kind of rigorous physical activity such as bike riding, intake of certain medications, and herbal supplements. It is not advised to give a sample if you have undergone through digital rectum exam, or have given a biopsy sample of the prostate.
