Bilirubin results depend on your age, gender, and health. Normal bilirubin levels are generally less than 1 milligram per deciliter (mg/dL). Adults with jaundice generally have bilirubin levels greater than 2.5mg/dL.
Bilirubin testing is usually one of a group of tests to check the health of your liver. Bilirubin testing may be done to investigate jaundice a yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by high levels of bilirubin.
Hepatitis A and E are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, C and D usually occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids.
Abnormal LFTs may indicate deranged liver enzymes. A specific liver disease process example ongoing liver cell damage or impaired function of the liver.
High SGPT indicate hepatocellular damage that could be due to viral infections (hepatitis A, B & C), drug (antitubercular drugs, paracetamol, etc.) toxicity.
