Research has shown that people with Polycythemia tend to have higher levels of mast cells in their blood. Mast cells are involved in the immune system's allergic response. They release histamines, which cause allergic symptoms, including itching skin
Both the hemoglobin and the hematocrit are based on whole blood and are therefore dependent on plasma volume. If a patient is severely dehydrated, the hemoglobin and hematocrit will appear higher than if the patient had sufficient water. However, if the patient is fluid overloaded, they will be lower than their actual level.
The most common treatment for polycythemia vera is having frequent blood withdrawals, using a needle in a vein (phlebotomy). It's the same procedure used for donating blood. This decreases your blood volume and reduces the number of excess blood cells
Polycythemia vera result in sideroblastic anemia because the marrow can no longer produce blood cells resulting in low levels of healthy functioning red blood cells causing anemia, platelets (thrombocytopenia) and white blood cells (leukopenia).
About 70 percent of your body's iron is found in the red blood cells of your blood called hemoglobin and in muscle cells called myoglobin.
