Liver enzymes are essential for the healthy functioning of the body. Two of the common ones are known as "AST" and "ALT." If the liver is damaged, AST and ALT pass into the bloodstream.
A liver infection, or liver scarring may cause the liver not to function properly.
If you have acute liver failure, common complications include bacterial and fungal infection and low blood sugar. Swelling of the brain is another side effect of acute liver failure. It is also one of the most serious conditions. One may experience confusion, abdominal swelling, and abnormal bleeding. Consult with a hepatologist at the earliest.
Your doctor may suspect that you have it if you get abnormal results on liver tests that you had for other reasons. However, it is not easy to diagnose till one performs tests and CT scans.
The normal range of an SGOT test is generally between 8 and 45 units per liter of serum. If your reports indicate 30 then you are fine.
