Prediabetes and metabolic syndrome are conditions that affect a sizeable portion of India's population. The Indian Council of Medical Research–INdia DIABetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study estimates that 15.3% of the Indian population is prediabetic. The prevalence of this condition is higher in urban areas and is linked to factors such as age, sex, family history of diabetes, abdominal obesity, hypertension, and income status. But what exactly is this condition, and how does it overlap with metabolic syndrome?

Understanding Prediabetes

Prediabetes is classified as a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. It is often seen as a warning sign for type 2 diabetes. This serves as a wake-up call for individuals to make lifestyle changes to prevent the development of diabetes.

Unravelling Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that happen together and raise the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions are high blood pressure, excessive fat around the waist, high blood sugar, and unusual levels of cholesterol or triglycerides. In India, approximately one-third of the urban population has metabolic syndrome due to factors such as abdominal obesity, low HDL-C levels (good cholesterol), and hypertension.

The Overlapping Web: Prediabetes and Metabolic Syndrome

Prediabetes and metabolic syndrome are closely interconnected, often co-occurring in individuals due to shared risk factors such as obesity and insulin resistance. The presence of both conditions significantly increases the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Managing Prediabetes and Metabolic Syndrome

The management of prediabetes and metabolic syndrome primarily revolves around lifestyle modifications. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are some of the key elements in preventing the progression of these conditions to more serious health problems.

The prevalence of prediabetes and metabolic syndrome is alarmingly high in India. Recognising the risk factors and symptoms early can aid in prevention. It's time to shift the focus towards a healthier lifestyle to combat these conditions.
