The thyroid gland secretes hormones that manage many body functions. These hormones regulate energy levels, metabolism, and skin health. Any problems in thyroid function can lead to multiple skin disorders. If you have existing thyroid disease, paying attention to any skin changes will help in the early detection and treatment of thyroid-related skin diseases.
Effect of Thyroid Diseases on the Skin
Although your thyroid gland sits deep in your neck, many signs and symptoms of thyroid disease are shown on the skin, hair, and nails. Both low thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism) and high levels of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) can affect skin health.
Some of the skin problems associated with hypothyroidism include:
- Dry, pale, and cold skin due to decreased blood flow and sweating
- Thickening of the skin of the palms and/or soles
- A yellowish hue to the skin
- Slow-healing wounds
- Dry, brittle nails and hair
- Thinning of hair and lateral loss of eyebrows
- Puffy face and eyelids
On the other hand, some common skin problems experienced by people with hyperthyroidism include:
- Thinning skin
- Smooth, Warm, moist skin
- Fine, soft, and thinning scalp hair
- Flushing of the face and hands
- Distorted and overgrown nails
- Generalized Itchy skin (Pruritus and Urticaria)
- Reddish, tender, swelling, nodules, and plaques occur on shins, calves, and feet.
How to Manage Skin Issues Caused by Thyroid Disorders
Skin problems caused by thyroid issues can be managed by treating the specific skin symptoms and the underlying thyroid condition.
For instance, hypothyroidism can be treated with medications like levothyroxine, while hyperthyroidism can be treated with antithyroid medications. An endocrinologist or Physician can prescribe these medications. Once the underlying thyroid diseases are treated or controlled, and if the skin symptoms persist, a dermatologist or skin specialist can prescribe medications for the specific skin symptoms.
To prevent the progression of these skin conditions in thyroid disorders, it is also important to get regular blood tests to monitor thyroid function and maintain balanced hormone levels along with specific skin treatment.
Skin Care Tips
Following a good skincare routine can help maintain overall skin health. Here are some tips:
- Keep yourself hydrated well to maintain skin moisture.
- Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamins A & E.
- Use mild cleansers and heavy moisturizers if you have dry skin.
- Avoid long showers: Bathing too frequently or taking long showers can dry the skin faster. Showering for not more than 5 to 10 mins with warm water is recommended, and not too hot.
- People with oily skin can opt for non-comedogenic moisturizers, serums, and other skin-related products.
- Opt for skincare products that are less irritating on your skin, i.e., free from chemicals and strong fragrances.
Takeaway
Thyroid diseases can cause unpleasant and unhealthy skin conditions. Understanding the relationship between thyroid hormone function and skin health is crucial for managing these skin issues. If one notices any changes in their skin, especially when accompanied by other thyroid-related symptoms like extreme tiredness, temperature sensitivity, gut-related issues, weight changes, etc., one must seek professional medical advice to rule out any underlying thyroid disease.
